What can American Idol, America’s Got Talent, The X Factor, The Voice and any other reality TV Talent shows have to do with leadership?
One word: TALENT
we all know that talent is not the only ingredient in success but it definitely makes it easier.
There are three items I’d like to remind you of.
It Takes Less Than 10 Seconds To Recognize Whether You Have It Or You Don’t
Well…maybe it can take longer to recognize talent but it’s definitely not more than a few looks.
Here I have a couple examples of what I mean.
It took less than 3 seconds and 5 words for all judges to realize an opportunity that can’t be passed.
And of course, you may recognize this lady:
This time it took 3 seconds.
For both, the talent is undeniable.
What’s my point?
Leadership strength is equally recognizable. I’m always amazed at how quickly we can recognize who’s the leader in the room even when the person doesn’t say much. I’m certain you can relate.
Believe All You Want But Pigs Can’t Fly
It doesn’t matter how long the runway, when there’s no talent, it’s almost impossible to succeed.
Here’s my example:
Remember him? Yes, he released an album but, let’s be real, there’s no singing talent.
We are all talented at something but we aren’t talented at everything. There are some individuals out there that believe they are the greatest leaders in the world but in reality they are just blind to their behaviors, their demeanor, and their lack of relational skills.
I do want to make something clear, I believe we can all learn how to lead but there are many out there that aren’t willing to pay the price.
Leadership is influence, nothing more nothing less.
It Takes More Than Talent To Lead
The artist is nothing without the gift, but the gift is nothing without work. – Emile Zola
Like a diamond in the rough, there’s a lot of work needed to hone the leadership skills necessary to lead a team or organization to realize its vision.
Here’s what I would like you to remember
- Those around you can quickly figure out whether you have it or not.
- Believing is no replacement for talent.
- When it comes down to it, a hard work beats talent in the long run.
